Day-Care Surgery

Same-day surgery has expanded to major procedures with the post-pandemic ambulatory shift. The session covers day-case hernia, gallbladder and breast surgery, same-day discharge after colorectal (ERAS pathway), mastectomy same-day discharge, ambulatory surgery centre (ASC) design and certification, ERAS for day-case across procedures, and patient-selection criteria. Discussion addresses anaesthesia choices for ambulatory surgery, post-discharge follow-up (telehealth, nurse navigation), ASC vs hospital-based outpatient department reimbursement, complications and readmission rates, ambulatory total joint and shoulder arthroplasty, and workforce implications.
