Transplant Surgery
Transplant surgery has expanded indications and donor pools with multiple recent advances. The session covers DCD (donation after circulatory death) donor expansion, machine perfusion (OrganOx for liver, TransMedics for lung/heart, LifePort for kidney), kidney transplant living-donor expansion (paired exchanges), ABO-incompatible transplantation, and xenotransplantation (UAB porcine kidney trial, NYU heart trial follow-up). Discussion addresses multi-organ transplant (heart-kidney, kidney-pancreas), long-term immunosuppression outcomes, transplant in special populations, donor-pool expansion strategies, xenotransplantation ethics, and emerging tolerance-induction protocols.
